Narrative

Matt Boynton is interested in anti-colonial and anti-imperialist movements within the United States and the role of tradition in these movements. Through my research, I work to uncover the hidden influence of Marxist-Leninist ideology on the orientation of the Black Power movement. My dissertation, "The Politics of Memory in Deindustrial Detroit: The Living Legacies of Black Leninism, White Flight, and Urban Decline," focuses on the productive cross pollination of Black Nationalism and Marxism-Leninism in mid-twentieth century Detroit and on its subsequent disentanglement and historical erasure. I have intellectual and activist commitments to the dialectical tradition of Marxist thought.
