Mingwei Huang

Department Affiliations


Mingwei Huang is a PhD Candidate in American Studies with a concentration in Feminist and Critical Sexuality Studies. Her research interests broadly include Afro-Asia, the global south, south-south flows, empire, and the anthropologies of capitalism and globalization. Her dissertation, "The Politics of Friendship in the Afterlife of Bandung: Sino-African Contemporaries in South Africa" examines the roles of everyday sentiments, cosmopolitan cultural practices, and the sociality of friendship in the context of contemporary Chinese migration and capital flows to South Africa. Her ethnographic research focuses on Chinese mass tourism, "China Malls," and state-sponsored cultural performances in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Mingwei also writes about Afro-Asia and gender, and teaches U.S. popular culture.
