About Us

Welcome

American Studies is the interdisciplinary study of culture(s) in the U.S.—locally, regionally, transnationally, and globally. American Studies students at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities are trained to study US cultures, policies, and discourse, and their local/regional/transnational/global interactions.

Faculty and students work in a variety of academic fields, including: literature, history, sociology, anthropology, ethnic and diaspora studies, gender, women’s and feminist studies, queer studies, geography, cultural studies, art history, urban studies, political science, and the history of science. In addition, the Department of American Studies maintains a strong commitment to comparative race and ethnic studies scholarship. We maintain important intellectual ties to the departments of African American Studies, Chicano Studies, American Indian Studies, and the Asian American Studies at the U of M.
